Void Detection

We detect subsurface voids to confirm a construction site’s structural integrity before you build.

How it Works

While locating underground utilities is critical, another of the most common hazards impacting construction projects is the presence of underground air or water filled voids. Using Ground Penetrating Radar and Electrical Resistivity Tomography (also known as Electrical Resistivity Imaging), we provide our clients detailed 2D or 3D imaging of the target area, highlighting any voids or unknowns gaps in the subsurface. We provide the necessary information to excavate safely, confirm structural integrity of buildings, effectively design drainage systems, and more.

How can our void detection specialists help on your construction project?

Ground Penetrating Radar

GPR is a non-invasive technology that transmits and receives electromagnetic waves to detect voids beneath a surface. While our clients most frequently request void detection on concrete structures - we can also scan soil, rock, concrete, asphalt, ice, wood and water. Our experienced technicians provide accurate horizontal and depth locations for subsurface voids so your team can build safely and confidently.

Electrical Resistivity Tomography

The ERT process involves inducing an electrical current into the ground and measuring the subsurface resistivity that the current encounters. ERT can penetrate significantly greater depths and more materials than GPR, so it is often used to detect deep subsurface voids or cavities, bedrock depths, ground water location or contamination, soil variations and more. Using this technology, our technicians are able to produce comprehensive geological site reports that help your team understand the risks and limitations of the surface you’re building on.
